Saudi Arabia Paints & Coatings: Types of Industrial Paint Coatings

How Industrial Paint Coatings Protect Equipment and Extend Service Life

Paint doesn't just make a product look better. It can protect metal and plastic surfaces from various kinds of damage like corrosion and scratching.

Industry coatings can protect metal surfaces from various kinds of attacks including mechanical stress and different chemicals. The right coating for the job depends on the service conditions.

According to GMI Research The Saudi Arabian paint and coatings market is expected to reach 2.9 billion USD by 2033.

Types of Industrial Coatings

Different conditions demand different kinds of coatings. Factors like temperature, pressure, humidity and other environmental stresses determine the protective barrier a coating provides.

Organic Coatings: Petroleum products and synthetic resins are the building blocks of organic coatings. By modifying these ingredients with additives and pigments, a large variety of coatings can be made. These coatings find a wide range of uses in industries.

Alkyd Coatings: Alkyd coatings can be applied on a wide range of substrates. These coatings are used for finishes in both interior and exterior environments including underground and underwater. These coatings contain unsaturated fats which need to be oxidized to crosslink and harden.

EPoxy Coatings: Epoxy coatings are used to protect and provide a durable barrier for various substrates. Epoxy coatings have excellent adhesion, strength, toughness, abrasion resistance, and excellent chemical and solvent resistance. Epoxy coatings are easy to apply, and repair is made easy by the fact that most are amenable to recoating.

Polyurethane Coatings: Polyurethane coatings are similar to epoxy coatings in that they provide corrosion protection, and an excellent barrier to solvents, chemicals and weathering. Polyurethane coatings can be applied over a wide temperature range. Polyurethane coatings are cross-linked, two-component systems. These coatings are easier to recoat.

Inorganic Coatings: Inorganic coatings are composed of complex formulations of enamels, additives and pigments. These coatings provide protection to various Industrial facilities from the environment, weather and physical conditions. Inorganic coatings can be applied to various substrates to provide protection from acids, alkalis, chlorides, moisture, heat and corrosion.

Acrylic Coatings: Acrylic coatings can be easily formulated to provide excellent adhesion, corrosion protection and resistance, toughness and impact strength. The final properties of an acrylic coating depend on the various additives, pigments, solvents and other ingredients used in their formulation.

Ceramic Coatings: Ceramic coatings can be applied to metallic substrates to provide a high-temperature barrier to chemical and moisture corrosion. Ceramic coatings provide resistance to vapor and other corrosive gases and coatings. Ceramic coatings can protect equipment against abrasive wear and corrosion. These coatings are excellent for tanks and piping.

Intumescent Coatings: Intumescent coatings are a kind of coating which is used for protection from fire. When the surface of these coatings is exposed to fire or extremely hot temperatures, then these coatings expand and transform into a layer of foam. This layer isolates and protects the internal surface from the heat of fire.

Because of the above-mentioned property of intumescent coatings, these are used for the protection of steel structures which are prefabricated and have to be transported over long distances. Intumescent coatings are also used in buildings and other structures where there is a need for protection against fire for a prolonged duration of time.
